Air Tightness Tests
An air tightness measurement involves creating negative or positive pressure in the home or building using a special fan and digital pressure gauge. This allows uncontrolled air flows in the structure to be detected and quantified. This data forms an important basis for energy calculations, often in the context of EPB reporting.
The pressure differences that arise during the measurement are completely safe and cause no damage to people or materials.
At KPM, you choose the context in which you want an airtightness measurement to be carried out.
1. Standard measurement according to STS-P 71-3 and ISO 9972 (EPB)
New construction projects and major renovations must comply with EPB regulations. The aim is to achieve the lowest possible E-level as proof of energy efficiency.
An airtightness measurement is not mandatory, but is often essential to achieve a better E-level. Without a measurement, a standard value is used, which is usually less favourable than the actual value.
The measurement is carried out in accordance with the applicable standards and concludes with a certificate of conformity issued by a recognised quality framework. This certificate is necessary for the EPB declaration.
In the event of a less favourable result or during an intermediate phase of construction, we can carry out an air leak detection test if desired. Based on this, we provide targeted advice on how to improve airtightness.
2. Comfort measurement
Your home should be a comfortable and pleasant place. Problems such as draughts, a home that is difficult to heat, overheating in summer, noise pollution or odour nuisance can indicate poor airtightness.
With an airtightness measurement, combined with a thermographic scan, we identify the cause of these inconveniences and provide targeted solutions.
3. Airtightness measurement for EPC
An airtightness measurement can also be an added value for the EPC certificate. Although the impact here is smaller than in an EPB file, the measurement can make a difference in specific situations — for example, to fall just outside the renovation obligation or to turn a high B score into an A score.
An airtightness measurement will not drastically improve your EPC score, but it can give you that little extra boost. Ask KPM for advice to find out whether it makes sense in your situation.
